How to Get to Lisbon from Lagos: Two Scenic Routes to Explore

Lisboa
Lisboa

For guests staying at our beach house in Lagos, a trip to Lisbon is a fantastic way to explore more of Portugal’s charm. The journey from Lagos to Lisbon can be an adventure in itself, with two stunning routes offering unique experiences: the scenic Atlantic Coast route and the culturally rich Alentejo inland route. Here’s your guide to making the most of both options, complete with tips, stops, and recommendations.

Option 1: The Scenic Atlantic Coast Route

The Atlantic Coast drive is perfect for those who love coastal scenery, charming beach towns, and delicious seafood.

1. Praia da Bordeira: A Coastal Gem

Start your journey with a visit to Praia da Bordeira, just 40 minutes northwest of Lagos. This stunning stretch of coastline has one of the deepest sandy beaches you’ll ever see. Park your car and stroll along the wooden pathways with multiple lookouts offering panoramic views of the ocean. A handful of beachside restaurants serve breakfast and lunch, making this a perfect first stop.

2. Aljezur and the Drive to Comporta

As you continue your drive, pass through the quaint and historic town of Aljezur, nestled amidst rolling hills and picturesque scenery. From Praia da Bordeira, it’s a two-and-a-half-hour coastal drive to Comporta, a tiny yet stylish town known for its beautiful beaches and sumptuous seafood. Stop for lunch at O Tobias, where you can enjoy fresh seafood on a charming covered deck.

3. Near Lisbon: A Stop in Setúbal

Wine lovers can make a detour to Setúbal, a region known for its vineyards and delicious Moscatel wine. However, if time is tight, you can head straight to Lisbon from Comporta, a drive of about one and a half hours.

Tip for Lisbon: Lisbon is not a car-friendly city, so we recommend dropping off your rental car or parking it for the duration of your stay. If you have extra time, take a short train ride to classy Cascais, a historic coastal town with a hip city beach and excellent lunch options.

Option 2: The Alentejo Inland Route

The inland route through Alentejo is ideal for travelers who value history, wine, and off-the-beaten-path landscapes.

1. Winery Visits

Ninety minutes north east of Lagos and you’re in beautiful wine country, dotted with olive groves. There are countless winery options, but two of our favourites are Ribafreixo Wines and Cartuxa Wines (close to Evora). Both offer exceptional tours and tastings of Alentejo’s famous wines.

2. Discover Alentejo’s Hidden Lakes

Head further north-east to the Great Lake of Alqueva. This is a hidden gem that should not be missed. This massive man-made lake features sandy beaches, stunning views, and tranquil swimming spots. For a relaxing meal with a view, stop at the Alqueva Bar/Restaurant in the village of Alqueva.

3. Évora: A UNESCO World Heritage Site

A highlight of this route is Évora, a walled city steeped in history and culture. This capital of the Alentejo region features a blend of Roman, Arabic, and Portuguese architecture. Take time to wander its quiet, cobblestone streets and visit landmarks like the Roman Temple and Évora Cathedral. Staying overnight here is the best way to fully experience the town’s unique cuisine and renowned local wines.

Whether you prefer the dramatic coastal views of the Atlantic route or the quiet charm and cultural richness of Alentejo, both journeys offer unforgettable experiences. Plan your stops, take your time, and enjoy the ride—getting to Lisbon can be just as enjoyable as exploring the city itself.

Happy travels! 🚗✨
